ProPeten has more than 10 years of experience working in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve of Peten, Guatemala. Within each strategic area, the organization has achieved the following:

Environmental Education:

  • Published the following environmental education books:
    • Aprendiendo Ecología de Peten (Learning About Ecology in Peten)
    • Relatos ecológicos de Peten (Ecological Stories of Peten)
  • Designed and implemented the Strategy of Environmental Education in Peten (co-author)
  • Inclusion of environmental education in the official public school curriculum in the whole department of Peten
  • Production of Environmental Education Curriculum Guides in the department of Peten
  • Trained more than 250 teachers on the use of the Environmental Education Curriculum Guides
  • Increased in the environmental awareness of the population of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve through radio programs and informal and formal environmental education activities
  • Graduated more than 80 people from the School of Agro-forestry Promoters
  • More than 5000 students from various education centers have benefited from the environmental education program

Health and Environment:

  • More than 80 midwives and health promoters trained
  • Published the following books:
    • Usemos Plantas Medicinales de Peten (Use of Medicinal Plants of Peten)
    • Experiencias en el uso de Plaguicidas Naturales en la Comunidad de Cruce a dos Aguadas, San Andres Peten (Experiences in the use of Natural Pesticides in the Community of Cruce a dos Aguadas, San Andrés, Petén)
  • Establishment of community pharmacies
  • More than 2000 people benefited have from the organic agriculture program
  • Creation of income generating projects for women familiares en 5 comunidades
  • Improved the diet in 5 communities through the establishment of family gardens
  • Reduction of the birthrate in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve
  • Preservation of traditional medicinal plant knowledge through organization of exchanges between indigenous healers

Economic Alternatives:

  • Community Businesses Established and Operating:
    • Eco Escuela de Español San Andres Peten (Spanish School)
    • Escuela Ecológica Cultural de San Jose Peten (Cultural Ecology School)
    • Community Forestry Concession of Carmelita and San Andres Peten (Thanks to the consulting offered by ProPeten, these communities are considered the two best community concessions of the 13 granted by the Guatemalan government.)
    • Cooperativa Integral de Comercialización Carmelita R.L. (Business Cooperative)
    • Three ecotourism committees trained and equipped
    • Designed and developed three ecotourism routes through the Mayan Biosphere Reserve
    • Strengthened the administrative capacity and self management of 6 communities
    • Granted Forestry Certifications for two forestry concessions
  • Others:
    • o Creation of Ecomaya (business marketing of tourist products made in the communities)
    • o Creation of the Green Alliance (organization that works toward responsible tourism in Peten)

Scientific Research:

ProPeten has also realized numerous scientific research projects that support the conservation of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, and in particular, the Laguna del Tigre National Park. The achievements are as follows:

  • Study of the Scarlet Macaw:
    • Distribution and abundance of the Scarlet Macaw
    • Improving the reproductive success through artificial nests
    • Telemetry study to monitor the annual movement of the species
    • Study of plants associated with the Scarlet Macaw

  • Other Biological Studies:
    • Birds
    • Crocodiles
    • Fish
    • Amphibians
    • Butterflies

  • Socioeconomic Studies:
    • Socioeconomic state of the Laguna del Tigre National Park since the year 2000
    • Socioeconomic studies of various communities within the Mayan Biosphere Reserve

Public Policy Work:

  • Active participation in the design of the Tourism Policy for Protected Areas
  • Shaped the Inter-institutional Commission for the Implementation of the Environmental Education Strategy of Peten, CISEA
  • Supported the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) with the use and management of natural resources
