Located on the shores of the San Pedro River in Laguna del Tigre National Park (see map), the Scarlet Macaw Biological Station is a destination for scientific researchers, naturalists and bird watchers, school and university groups, other groups seeking a remote yet comfortable destination for conferences, and volunteers.

Surrounded by the lush mayan jungle, you will fall asleep to the sound of howler monkeys and wake to the warbling of the more than 260 bird species that either make their home here or migrate through the area. Visitors often are delighted by the spider monkeys that visit our towering zapote tree to eat this favorite fruit and by the many varieties of orchids that adorn the station grounds. The surrounding jungle also is home to a number of threatened or endangered species including jaguar (Pantera onca), tapir (Tapirus bairdii), scarlet macaw (Ara macao), and the moreletii crocodile (Cocodrylus moreletii).

Visit us and help support the conservation work in which ProPeten, a Guatemalan non-profit organization, is engaged in this beautiful yet threatened corner of the Maya Biosphere Reserve.

How to Get Here

Principle access is by river, a trip of 15-20 minutes from Paso Caballos, a Q'eqchi' community located 75 kilometers northwest of Flores, Peten. Roundtrip transportation from Flores to Paso Caballos can be arranged through ProPeten, a service that is included in our all-inclusive tours. Roundtrip bus transportation from Santa Elena to Paso Caballos may be possible during the dry season, though can be unreliable.
