Research

The Biological Station´s location on the banks of the San Pedro River, near the southern boundary of Laguna del Tigre National Park (LTNP), provides researchers with a home base to explore the LTNP´s more than 338,000 hectares which are home to among the last remaining tracts of Central Maya forest (humid tropical forest) and boast the largest extension of fresh water wetlands in all of Meso-America. The station, along with its two monitoring stations at the Laguna El Perú and Peñon Buena Vista, makes for easy access to intact habitat for a number of species of animals, plants and birds that are increasingly threatened due to fragmented and disappearing ecosystems, many of which have never been studied.

Since inauguration of the facility in 1998, scientists from around the world have conducted studies on tropical birds species, flora, amphibians and reptiles, water quality, invertebrate fauna, and Rapid Ecological Assessment (RAP) of biodiversity (both aquatic and terrestrial).

Researchers working from the station hava access to our laboratory and information center which houses the results of previous studies conducted from the station, as well as access to experienced field assistants with invaluable knowledge of the area and its ecosystems.

Download a list of bird species found near the Station (MS Word document).

For more information about research opportunities, results of previous investigations or a copy of species lists, email us at estacionguacamayas@propeten.org.
