The Mobile Biosphere continues its work in 11 communities of the Maya
Biosphere Reserve
Through the “Mobile Biosphere” component, Remedios is working together with
8 voluntary promoters (the project aimed at setting up and working with 5 to
8 promoters) who are doing community-based distribution of basic medicines
and main contraceptives, sold at a very low price. These promoters work
under the supervision of Remedios’ bilingual Educator in Sexual and
Reproductive Health, Cony Chub. Since March, we worked with communities to
help select the promoters where there was interest in having one, they
received initial training and their first mini-pharmacy. All of these
promoters are women, and most received strong support from their husbands in
the management of the mini-pharmacies. Medicines are bought from
APROFAM-Peten, allowing for the very low prices.
At the same time, the Mobile Biosphere carried out educational activities
related to reproductive health, environmental education, organic
agriculture, in 11 communities of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, with an
average total of 400 participants in proposed activities (for the entire
route), visiting each community about once a month. Since the beginning of
2005, the Mobile Biosphere team carried out about 47 outings. Over the last
3 months, in addition to setting up voluntary promoters, the team has
focused on hands-on activities (preparation of organic fertilizing systems),
as well on working with youth (sexual reproductive health, as well as
environmental education), and looking into innovative ways to involve men in
the area of sexual and reproductive health. This is an aspect want to
strengthen over the coming months. We also carried out 161 surveys (in
Spanish and in Q’eqchi’), in 10 communities, on knowledge, attitudes and
practices (KAP) related to reproductive health, and some
environmentally-related questions), and are in the process of analyzing the
information gathered. Stay tuned for news about findings
Over the coming months, we would like to strengthen the Mobile Biosphere
work with men, and coordinate more Mobile Clinics (with medical
examinations, pap smear exams, voluntary surgical sterilization, IUD
insertion, etc) with APROFAM, like the one that will take place on July 27
in Paso Caballos. People from the communities of Buen Samaritano and Mirador
Chocop have been invited to attend, and we are providing them with support
for transportation, and our next visit we will bring back results for all
the pap smears performed.. We also want to continue working closely with the
voluntary promoters, and improve the use of drama techniques in our
educational activities.
