Volunteer
Volunteer
with us at the Biological Station and you will have the opportunity to
live and work in the Peten jungle, learn about the plants and wildlife
that make their home here, acquire some basic work skills, practice
your Spanish with our park guards, learn to make tortillas, and while
doing so contribute to the conservation work that ProPetén and
the Scarlet Macaw Biological Station are undertaking in Laguna del
Tigre National Park.
Like many volunteer programs
in Guatemala, volunteers pay a nominal fee which is used to help with
station maintenance. The cost is roughly USD$12 per day for short-term
volunteers and decreases to roughly USD$10 per day for long-term
volunteer stays. In return, volunteers receive a bed in one of our
dormitory-style rooms complete with sheets, towels and mosquito nets,
use of our well-equipped kitchen which includes a gas stove and
refrigerator (volunteers supply their own food), drinking water, and of
course round-trip transportation to and from the station from Flores. A
two-week minimum commitment is required of volunteers.
The Biological Station is
currently seeking a volunteer for the following specific position:
Public outreach
coordinator for the Scarlet Macaw Biological Station. We are
seeking a dynamic volunteer to expand the number of visitors to our
biological station in Laguna del Tigre National Park. This
involves: (1) the recruitment of biologists/ecologists from
Guatemalan and foreign universities, (2) promotion of the station's
ecotourism program to local and international tourism markets, and (3)
further development of the existing volunteer program. Regular
travel between the biological station and ProPeten's office is
expected. Volunteers with scientific backgrounds and/or
business/marketing experience preferred.
Other possible volunteer projects include:
- developing
interpretive
trails and trail maintenance
- maintaining the station´s fire lines
- caring for our white turtles (tortuga blanca) which
involves cleaning their pool and harvesting leaves from the forest for
food
- tending our agro-forestry area
